The SCIRA Exemplary Reading Program Award is sponsored by the International Reading Association and recognizes an outstanding reading and language arts program in one South Carolina school.

The Exemplary Reading Award has five objectives:

  • To promote literacy and literacy learning
  • To recognize those demonstrating excellence in reading and literacy instruction
  • To further develop reading/language arts programs in school settings
  • To disseminate information about high quality programs so that other schools may improve their own instructional efforts
  • To report to the public these noteworthy efforts to improve reading skills

Participation criteria:

  • All South Carolina schools (public, private, parochial) are eligible for the award.
  • Schools must apply with an entire schoolwide reading/language arts program, not just one segment (i.e., Title 1, media center, Reading Recovery, individual teacher).
  • At least one faculty or staff member of that school is a current IRA member.
  • The application must be complete and signed by the chief school and district official.
  • The winning program should serve as a model for other schools for at least 3 years.
  • A school that has received the IRA Exemplary Reading Program Award cannot apply again within a period of three years.
  • A school is not eligible to apply if a current state or provincial council officer is employed in the school.
